What is Aromatherapy and How it works
So What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the science of using Essential Oils derived from plant essences for mental and physical wellbeing. The plant matter, which might consist of flowers, leaves, roots, bark, etc. is processed in order to extract the plant essence. The main method is steam distillation. Other methods include expression, enfleurage, solvent extraction, percolation and carbon dioxide extraction.

How It Works?

Aromatherapy works at several different levels within the body, soul and mind. In order to find the best possible treatment option, you need to consider more than just the physical symptoms. This is what makes aromatherapy such a holistic treatment.

Aromatherapy is an extremely potent natural healer. Once you have started to see the benefits for yourself, it is something that you will never want to be without again.

Essential oils are Mother Nature’s superheroes, and aromatherapy is the key to harnessing their power.

I have been using essential oils in my daily life for a long time now, and I cannot imagine my life without them. I use them to help lift my mood, give me an extra boost of energy, heal ailments and connect to my inner soul being. I wrote about that in my book.

Aromatherapy is as important when it comes to taking care of yourself holistically as diet, exercise and relaxation are.

When we are discussing holistic living, we mean that every part of our being must be considered – body, mind and soul – and that we are trying to strike a balance between them. By connecting to every part of ourselves, and ensuring that these are in harmony with one another, we are better able to reach our full potential.

Holistic living is not some fad or quick fix. It is something that must be worked on consistently. When you try to heal holistically, you are not just trying to treat the symptoms of disease; you are also looking at the underlying cause.

Some background into Aromatherapy...

Aromatherapy in one form or another has been practiced by mankind since ancient times. It is thought that the Australian aborigines were the first to start to discover this healing tradition. Unfortunately, there is no way to confirm this because they had no written tradition at the time.

Most ancient cultures, from the Chinese to the Egyptians have, however, left written evidence of the use of essential oils. It is thought that it was the ancient Egyptians who made it fashionable to use essential oils, although many other cultures had already had some experience with them.

In 1920 a French chemist and perfumer, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, was burned in a lab accident and, as a reflex, stuck his arm into a vat of Lavender oil. He noted that recovery was painless and fast and that he bore no scars, and so started researching the benefits of essential oils. It was he who coined the term, “Aromatherapy.”

From then on, aromatherapy and the benefits of essential oils have become the subject of numerous studies, with some interesting results. It has been found, for example, that essential oils can be as effective at killing bacteria as even the strongest chemical cleaners, and can be even more powerful than antibiotics when it comes to killing superbugs. More about aromatherapy can be find in my book.
